Kanya works as a researcher, writer and lecturer, often exploring tragedy, identity, and politics of performance. Currently, Kanya is pursuing a PhD in English Philology at Heidelberg University, under the DAAD Graduate School Scholarship. Kanya earned her MA Theatre and Performance (Cum Laude) at the University of Cape Town as an Andrew W Mellon scholar. She has published in journals like the South African Theatre Journal and Voertaal.

As a lecturer Kanya has worked at the University of Cape Town, ACT Cape Town, Free Film School and has served as a mentor and facilitator for Theatre Arts, Baxter Theatre Centre, Zabalaza Theatre Festival and Distell’s National Playwright Competition.

Her presentations span multiple international forums, delving into language, belonging, and protest, often focusing on South Africa’s unique socio-political landscape. Viljoen’s scholarly work bridges the academic and artistic, creating a distinctive space where critical inquiry and creative practice converge.
